Monitoring Riparian Plants

Consistent with previous years’ Environmental Leadership Program work on Whitewater Ranch, more specifically Goose Creek, the 2015 Riparian Planting Monitoring (RPM) protocols associated with this proposal were focused on collecting data in order for future managers to: estimate and measure growth rates of riparian plantings, evaluate survival rates and vigor of different species, as well as identify possible issues such as competition and disease.

Monitoring of riparian plantings is necessary to evaluate the success of different planting methods; protection and maintenance techniques; and species, type, and sources of planted stock. Information on tree protection, competing vegetation and damage informs future maintenance needs. The three primary variables of interest are survival, growth and vigor. These variables provide insight into site-specific microsite preferences by certain species as well as responses to management.
